Isuzu To Launch Electric Elf, Upgraded Giga Trucks For 2020

TOKYO// – Aside the all-new D-Max pickup it will launch next week for 2020, Isuzu Motors, is also set to unveil two new trucks to welcome the new decade.

These are the enhanced Giga series, and their very first pure electric medium-duty truck.

For the 2020 Giga, Isuzu will be adding a host of advanced active safety features previously reserved for high-end luxury cars. The new, updated Giga will now come with automatic emergency braking, and even pedestrian and cyclist detection systems to avoid instances of clipping them. Also added is blind spot monitoring, which should be a handy feature when wielding a truck over 10 metres long.

Another active safety feature added to the Giga was adaptive cruise control. Isuzu says this is to help drivers in reducing fatigue, especially over long-distance, cross country hauls. Last but not least is a redesigned high-roof cab.

With the idea of electrification sweeping across the entire automotive industry, Isuzu has also jumped in on the wave. From the company that’s best known for building some of the most regarded diesels comes an all-electric medium-duty truck. The popular Elf truck swaps its turbodiesel for a pack of batteries and electric motors.

Isuzu didn’t reveal much details about the electric Elf. However, we are expecting a long range per full charge given the purpose of these vehicles. They did mention two convenience features, namely the swivel seat for the driver for ease of entry and exit, cameras in place of side mirrors, and a 3D surround-view camera.

With an all-new pickup, an enhanced heavy-duty truck, and their very first electric vehicle just around the corner, Isuzu’s next decade will be an interesting one indeed. The electric Elf, as well as the upgraded Giga will make their official debut at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
